Exodus 5:8

Context
NETBible

But you must require 1  of them the same quota of bricks that they were making before. 2  Do not reduce it, for they are slackers. 3  That is why they are crying, ‘Let us go sacrifice to our God.’

NIV ©

biblegateway Exo 5:8

But require them to make the same number of bricks as before; don’t reduce the quota. They are lazy; that is why they are crying out, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’

NASB ©

biblegateway Exo 5:8

"But the quota of bricks which they were making previously, you shall impose on them; you are not to reduce any of it. Because they are lazy, therefore they cry out, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’

NLT ©

biblegateway Exo 5:8

But don’t reduce their production quotas by a single brick. They obviously don’t have enough to do. If they did, they wouldn’t be talking about going into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to their God.

MSG ©

biblegateway Exo 5:8

And make them produce the same number of bricks--no reduction in their daily quotas! They're getting lazy. They're going around saying, 'Give us time off so we can worship our God.'

BBE ©

SABDAweb Exo 5:8

But see that they make the same number of bricks as before, and no less: for they have no love for work; and so they are crying out and saying, Let us go and make an offering to our God.

NRSV ©

bibleoremus Exo 5:8

But you shall require of them the same quantity of bricks as they have made previously; do not diminish it, for they are lazy; that is why they cry, ‘Let us go and offer sacrifice to our God.’

NKJV ©

biblegateway Exo 5:8

"And you shall lay on them the quota of bricks which they made before. You shall not reduce it. For they are idle; therefore they cry out, saying, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’

NETBible

But you must require 1  of them the same quota of bricks that they were making before. 2  Do not reduce it, for they are slackers. 3  That is why they are crying, ‘Let us go sacrifice to our God.’

NET Notes

tn The verb is the Qal imperfect of שִׂים (sim, “place, put”). The form could be an imperfect of instruction: “You will place upon them the quota.” Or, as here, it may be an obligatory imperfect: “You must place.”

tn Heb “yesterday and three days ago” or “yesterday and before that” is idiomatic for “previously” or “in the past.”

tn Or “loafers.” The form נִרְפִּים (nirpim) is derived from the verb רָפָה (rafah), meaning “to be weak, to let oneself go.” They had been letting the work go, Pharaoh reasoned, and being idle is why they had time to think about going to worship.
